Hanabi (Fireworks) Haiku

gleaming bright colors

hued with the paints of sparkle

fireworks in the sky

~

fun festival times

a play of fire all around

the burning night skies

~

radiant ablaze

reflecting back the beauty

still river waters

~

the dusk approaches

warding off evil spirits

with glazing fireworks

~

across river bank

looking for the hanabi

come hoards of tourists

~

a boom and a bang

piercing silence of the dark

the lights of glory

lonely Shinto shrine

* The last two haiku are derived from a Japanese folktale; The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. I came to know about it in a Japanese cartoon show once.

Evolution

The evolution of a being

from the childhood’s reverie

to a grown up’s veracity

from the glimmer of the stars

to the blaze of the sun

from a small injury

to a large gaping wound

from an innocent vision

to a gruesome deed

from the world of truth

to the universe of tall tales

from a fresh water lake

to the ever salty ocean

from the protection of the nest

to the vast lonely sky

from a seed that is sown

to a pest infected plant

from the drop of nectar

to an urn of venom,

the evolution of an infant

to a grown up soul

tarnished by world

shaded by emotions

from the afternoon nap

to the insomniac nights

from the playful toys

to the killer weapons,

there is an evolution

a real evolution

of a spirit as he turns

from a joyful mirth

to an evil sneer in the end.

The Evil

The evil stands up when I stand

It sleeps beside me on the bed

It is there when I eat

And also when I try to read and write

I feel its presence-

A chill descends upon my body

And my soul craves to run there and then

But I am lost

I want that evil to stand up when I stand

To sleep beside me on the bed

Be there when I eat

Also when I read and write

I want its presence around me

Because that evil is no one but me.

That evil is no one but me

Me being responsible for my deeds

I hurt myself

I kick myself in the shins

That evil is no one but me

That evil is no one but me…

That evil is no one but me

I am the one who deals with me

I am the one who is my worst enemy

I am responsible for everything

Everything, everything, everything

That evil is no one but me…

I do not know

who I am

anymore

I struggle to see

myself within

me

I do not know

who I am

anymore

I can’t find

myself

anymore.
