waking up alone

amy
a sweet supposition of staying –

a berry-like beau living in little
exchange of a light dream,
dying in the rapture of its brilliance
in a paint-peeling world,

a likely return to the existing
absence of its past, a sky white
wakefulness towards its own burning –

a river, a moon fretting over
a hundred years of dashed hopes, of brittle
triumphs –

twenty-seven miles breaking
hearts, still making dreams,
negotiating for rainbow griefs,

rising, chasing, waking up alone

all for a similar kind of relief.

.

For MLM Menagerie’s Music Challenge on Moon River. I chose to go with Amy Winehouse’s cover. The above outline was something I drew recently. It has been 7 years now that she’s gone. The title is based on one of her tracks.

Also linking it up, albeit a little late, with dVerse OLN.

Like above, you had me at /dying in the rapture of its brilliance/ in a paint-peeling
world/. The piece is both lyrical and romantic, with a whiff of sadness.

  2. Love your response, and agree it’s both wistful and romantic. Like the moon river itself is just a dream or something nostalgic. Thanks for participating. I did love the Amy Winehouse version too, a conmpletely different take. She had such a brilliant voice, it’s so sad she died so young. Cheers.

  3. I love Amy Winehouse. We got to see her in Norwich before she was in great demand. I couldn’t believe it when she died – and then two weeks later my father died – four days before my birthday – which is why I always link them . He liked her music too.
    I love the flavour of
‘a sweet supposition of staying –

a berry-like beau living in little
    exchange of a light dream’
    and the lines:
‘a river, a moon fretting over
a hundred years of dashed hopes, of brittle
    triumphs.

I am really pulled into these lines, this stanza – and I just want to sit with them for some time, soaking in the resonance ….
and what a wonderful image – really the power of the line, form, contour etc. it is exceptional and really compliments the poem you’ve written. Clearly you are a talented artist Anmol!

Love this especially; “a berry-like beau living in little exchange of a light dream, dying in the rapture of its brilliance in a paint-peeling world.” Wonderfully wistful and romantic 💜
