We have water caltrops/water chestnuts here. These haiku are based on them:
handful of chestnuts
chucking out the green cover
white treasure within
~
a bite of chestnut
labors of peeling cover
sweet result in end
~
the water chestnuts
street vendor sold a kilo
scrubbing mud away
.
* For Carpe Diem # 298.
I never ate a chestnut…water or otherwise. They are a lovely sign of autumn though.

I have had water chestnuts in Chinese food. But not the kind that is roasted on an open fire.

They are indeed. Thank you.

Water chestnuts are crunchy, as Wabi Sabi says, but they are sadly lacking in flavour. Ah, well, not every food can have everything!

The last one is especially awesome because it’s has specific imagery and there is no interpretation at the end, just the scrubbing of mud away. Nice example of sabi.

I’ve never eaten chestnuts so I don’t know their taste. And water-chestnuts? You’re kidding … never heard of them.

No, I am not. They are quite crunchy but yes, they don’t have much of a flavor. 🙂
